The first-ever National Data Science Bowl is now ongoing and will be in progress until March 16, 2015.
To win, you have to look at nearly 100,000 underwater images and develop an algorithm that will enable researchers to identify and monitor planktonic organisms at a speed and scale never before possible. The plankton population is crucial for driving some of the planet’s most life-sustaining processes because they produce much of the world’s oxygen and absorb a large percentage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year, while serving as the foundation for all marine and many terrestrial food chains.
The top three algorithm creators and the leading university team will split $175,000 in prize money.
The event is being sponsored by the government contractor Booz Allen and analytics company Kaggle in partnership with Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center. Register on Kaggle to take part.
