Because they assumed that every future President would be like Joe Biden and continue to mandate and subsidize it. That didn't happen. The Trump team surprised a lot of people by winning again in 2024 and while some of the decisions made by his employees have been opposed to legitimate science and health, he was not wrong on solar and electric cars.
Paid flaks kept saying electric cars are taking over the world, solar powering it was surpassing "fossil" fuels(1), it was cheaper than conventional energy, and better for the environment.

No one wants the Honda Prologue and without being paid to buy them, electric cars are settling down to their free market levels; low. Image credit: Honda.
None of it is true. People stopped buying electric cars the minute they stopped getting paid to buy them. In Norway, they still get sold, but that is because half of Norways's GDP is oil exports. It is economically smarter to pay residents $25,000 or more to buy an electric car and sell the oil rather than use it domestically. Everywhere else, they have collapsed back to the same niche market they were before mandates.
GM took a huge loss after buying out dealerships that didn't want to sell electric cars once government was no longer paying to lose money on them. Hertz went from declaring they'd be 25 percent electric in their rentals to selling off most of its fleet because insurance and maintenance costs were too high. Ford walked away from $9 billion to not have to make them, which kept their losses down to $19 billion. Stellantis leads the electric car pack in losses with $25 billion.
Now Honda has taken its first loss since the 1950s due to electric cars - $15.7 billion. The company did better when they were still rebuilding after atomic bombs landed on their country in World War II than they are doing now. Due to electric cars. Honda also canceled all US production - because the federal government is not propping up the industry. They are not alone. It is a miracle Nissan is still in business at all.
Those same flaks paid by China using offshore donor-advised funds like Tides Foundation are now insisting tariffs are the problem but that ignores economics the same way electric cars and solar ignore science; tariffs are paid for by consumers, and conventional car sales are fine.
NOTE:
(1) That term is how you know they don't know what they are talking about. It is a myth manufactured by humanities majors because the founder of Sinclair Oil loved funding paleontology so much he had a dinosaur as their logo.

Clueless activists believed that meant oil came from dinosaur bones and oil would therefore also be extinct by...1992.
