- Announce Winners of First Annual ASAIHL-Scopus Young Scientist Award

Elsevier, the world's leading research publisher of scientific information, and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions announced today winners of the first annual ASAIHL-Scopus Young Scientist Award. The award is designed to recognize outstanding young scientists and researchers in the Asia-Pacific region who have made significant contributions to scholarship and research. Insight from Scopus, Elsevier's abstract and citation database of peer reviewed literature, was used to determine the winners.

One hundred and eighty four scientists and researchers under the age of 40 from Southeast Asia, South Asia and Hong Kong submitted their work to one of four categories: Life Science, Medicine, Agricultural Science, and Engineering and Technology. The top five young scientists in each category will receive a certificate of recognition with the winner given a monetary gift as well as a trip to the official award ceremony at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang in December.

Finalists in each category were selected and are from the following institutions:

- Life Science - Academia Sinica, Taiwan; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; National University of Singapore and University of Hong Kong - Medicine - Chinese University of Hong Kong; Siriraj Hospital, Thailand and University of Hong Kong - Agriculture Science - Chulalongkorn University, Thailand; Nanjing Agricultural University, China and Universiti Sains Malaysia - Engineering and Technology - Hong Kong Polytechnic University; King Mongkut's University of Technology, Thonburi, Thailand; Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; National Taiwan University and National Tsinghua University, Taiwan

Finalists were selected by 12 panelists, three peers from each of the four categories of entry. Applicants were evaluated based on three key criteria: number of citations and h-index, number of publications and patents based on Scopus data, as well as documented social impact.

We are pleased to recognize up-and-coming research leaders, said Inn Beng Lee, Head of Customer Marketing for Elsevier. The future of global scientific breakthroughs will depend on our young scientists and we are excited about recognizing those who are on the path to great success in their field.

We are excited about the enormous growth in scientific discoveries in the Asia Pacific region and recognize that continuing this momentum lies in the hands of young researchers, said Professor Peter Haddawy, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Asian Institute of Technology. The award is designed to thank and encourage young researchers who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of science.
