AUSTIN, Texas, January 15 /PRNewswire/ --

LUMINARY MICRO STAND NUMBER: 9-204 EMBEDDED WORLD 26th - 28th February 2008 NUREMBERG, GERMANY

Luminary Micro (http://www.luminarymicro.com), creators of the award-winning Stellaris(R) family of ARM Cortex(TM)-M3-based microcontrollers (MCUs), will be exhibiting at the Embedded World Show 2008 in Nuremberg, Germany. Luminary Micro will showcase its wide range of Stellaris microcontrollers as well as its new BLDC Motor Control Reference Design Kit and the Automation System Demo incorporating conveyor belts and four robotic arms and using Ethernet and CAN communications to drive the automation.

The Luminary Micro Stellaris BLDC Motor Control Reference Design Kit (RDK-BLDC) with Ethernet and CAN contains all necessary hardware and software to design, develop and integrate new BLDC motor applications. It combines the strength and flexibility of Luminary Micro's Stellaris microcontrollers with Fairchild Semiconductor's power modules, creating a sophisticated four-quadrant motor control for three-phase brushless DC motors rated at up to 36 V. The design is particularly suited for use in factory automation, robotics, electric wheelchairs and mobility devices, pumping and ventilation systems, and small appliances.

The BLDC Reference Design Kit includes the Luminary Micro Stellaris LM3S8971 microcontroller, a three-phase brushless DC motor, a graphical control program for Windows(TM), and accompanying cables, source code and documentation. The integrated features of the Stellaris microcontroller and the processing power of the ARM(R) Cortex(TM)-M3 core allow optimal control of a wide range of motors in diverse applications. The graphical control program allows users to experiment with different drive parameters and observe their effect on motor performance.

The Automation System Demo, which will also be presented at the Luminary Micro stand during the show, will demonstrate a typical automation system with many time-critical inputs and outputs working together over Ethernet and CAN networks. The Automation System Demo has two conveyor belts and four robotic arms working in complex motion sequence transfers, which will stack wooden blocks in continuous circulation. Seven control boards using a total of three different Stellaris microcontrollers communicate to operate the distributed control system. The overall process is configured and monitored by an embedded Web server running on a Stellaris EK-LM3S8962 evaluation board. The embedded Web server technology enables any authorised person with access to the World Wide Web to view and control the system.

Jean Anne Booth, Chief Marketing Officer at Luminary Micro comments: "Embedded World is the key European event for embedded professionals from around the world, where new ideas and innovations meet. Luminary Micro will contribute to this atmosphere by showing our new BLDC Motor Control Reference Design Kit and the mesmerising Automation System Demo built on the powerful Stellaris family of 32-bit microcontrollers."

Luminary Micro is the industry leader in bringing 32-bit capabilities and the full benefits of ARM Cortex-M3 based microcontrollers to the broadest reach of the microcontroller market. The company offers a range of 104 MCUs and 28 development and evaluation kits. The award-winning Stellaris family of mixed-signal microcontrollers is available worldwide in component form and in development systems.

About Luminary Micro and Stellaris

Luminary Micro, Inc. designs, markets and sells ARM Cortex-M3-based microcontrollers (MCUs). Austin, Texas-based Luminary Micro is the lead partner for the Cortex-M3 processor, delivering the world's first silicon implementation of the Cortex-M3 processor. Developed for use in embedded and industrial applications, Luminary Micro's introduction of the award-winning Stellaris(R) family of products provides 32-bit performance for the same price as current 8- and 16-bit microcontroller designs. With entry-level pricing at US$1.00 for an ARM technology-based MCU, Luminary Micro's Stellaris product line allows for standardization that eliminates future architectural upgrades or software tools changes.
