BILLERICA, Massachusetts, January 6 /PRNewswire/ --

Vertica Systems was named to Gartner's Data Warehouse Database Management Systems Magic Quadrant 2008.(1)

The high-performance column-oriented Vertica Analytic Database is the only analytic database built from scratch to handle today's heavy business intelligence workloads. Customers using the Vertica Analytic Database have the freedom to analyze more data in more ways, faster, so they can out-innovate the competition. In customer benchmarks, Vertica has answered queries against terabytes of data 50 to 200 times faster than competing databases and specialized analytic hardware.

In the July 2008 Hype Cycle for Data Management, 2008 report that covered Column Store Database Management Systems, Gartner Vice President and Analyst Donald Feinberg indicated: Column-store DBMSs should be considered as primary candidates for analytic data marts due to I/O performance gained from compression and retrieval of fewer columns (typical of analytic applications). In the two specific areas where column-store DBMS excel (analytics and archiving solutions), there can be a large cost savings and, with analytic applications, a large performance gain.

Being named in the Gartner Magic Quadrant is the latest achievement among several other 2008 distinctions for Vertica, including the company being named one of the top 100 private technology companies in the Red Herring's annual 100 North America Award, and a Computerworld Horizon Award for cutting-edge technologies. Since its launch last year, the Vertica Analytic Database has enabled leading companies like Comcast, JP Morgan Chase and Mozilla to integrate and analyze large volumes of information in data warehouse and business intelligence systems.

Industry analysts have called Vertica a 'revolution' in the database world, citing the huge performance advantages of grid-based, column-oriented databases for handling terabyte-scale analytic workloads, said Vertica CEO Ralph Breslauer. In my opinion, being named to Gartner's Magic Quadrant builds on this string of analyst validation. We're proud that a company as young as ours can make such an immediate impact on the database market.
