    About Tommaso

I am an experimental particle physicist working with the CMS experiment at CERN. In my spare time I play chess, abuse the piano, and aim my dobson...

Large collaborations of physicists have a consolidated habit of meeting three or four times per year for a full week of discussions and talks. This has multiple purposes, one of them being the possibility to bring together members who live and work off-site (which may mean several thousand miles away from CERN). So, to alleviate a little the lab-centered life of experiments, one of these events every year is typically held away from the lab, in the site of one of the institutions participating in the experiment.

So that's why I am in Lisbon this week. A "CMS Week" has just started this morning at the LNEC center, where several hundred collaborators have gathered in the main auditorium and are listening to the news by our spokesperson. I expect this to be an interesting time, where I can get filled in with what is going on in CMS which I have overlooked so far - believe me, there is a lot to get updated on!

Perhaps the most important piece of news that I can share with you here today is that the 2012 data taking is proceeding quite successfully. The LHC is running with initial instantaneous luminosities consistently at 7E33 cm^{-2} s^{-1}, and CMS has collected already 140% more statistics of 8 TeV collisions with respect to that which was used for the July 4th discovery announcement. Will we see updated plots of the H->ZZ and H->γγ mass distributions  with these new data ? Well, not very soon - the target is winter conferences, so we will have to all be patient.

Of course, Lisbon is also a quite pleasant city, especially at this time of the year. I am not too familiar with the place though, so if you know it well and have suggestions for places to dine or hang around, and things to see which are not in the typical guides, please do let me know!

Unfortunatelly today there are fires around, so it is not as pleasent as usual due to the smoke. :/ But anyway, Alfama and the castle are obvious choices, and the best way is to walk around through the hills. There are nice places to have a drink, such as Miradouro da Graça, where you have a nice panoramic view of Lisbon. Try eat grilled sardines at alfama. Near Museu do Fado there are good places to eat it. If you like contemporany art, you have some nice places such as Museu Berardo or Museum of Modern Art at Gulbenkian. Belem deserves a visit. Depending of the amount of days you have, Sintra is a must, with very nice palaces (personally my favorite is Quinta da Regaleira). Places to avoid: the restaurants at rua Augusta and nearby and Electrico 28 (actually electrico 28 was a very nice tram, but now is packed with tourists and pickpockets, one of the IMF guys here in Lisbon was robbed on that tram).

Enjoy it! Normally people are very nice, and they do understand a little of italian, even if they don't understand a word of english ;)

ah, and at night there are plenty places to have drinks, such as Bairro Alto or Cais de Sodré (although Cais de Sodré is more "underground", and far less touristic, it's my favorite place to go out right now). It has plenty of things, from artistic expositions to cheap bars, just for you to have an ideia.

Thanks! I will try to follow most of your advices. Belem is on my list, as the museums. I have seen the castle already, and indeed plan to go to Bairro Alto for drinks. Your leads are much appreciated.

    Best,
    T.
Man there is this place in Bairro Alto that has the best food. It is an old monastery but I forget the name. I bet if you ask a local s(he)'ll tell you right away. First thing I do when I go to portugal is go eat there.

You mean Cervejaria Trindade? It is at Chiado, very close to Bairro Alto. The building is beautiful. Here is a link: http://www.guiadacidade.pt/pt/poi-cervejaria-trindade-17843

Another restaurante that I like very much is this one: http://www.lifecooler.com/Portugal/restaurantes/RestauranteTomaLaDaCa

They don't take reservations, so it is good to arrive around 19h45. The fish is very good, the place nice and the prices are low ;)

Yeah I think that's it. Love love love that place. Get the tiger shrimp, bring a sack of money, but man it is worth every penny! Quintessential Portuguese dining. Hadn't been in Portugal for years and went to visit some family and my brother took me there. Now every time I visit that is the first place I haul my butt to.

Ah! Lisbon, what an inspiring city to be in. Good time to indulge yourself with a bit of gossiping, and tell us the latest hot news from CMS. Is there or is there not an excess in the diphoton channel?

THanks all for the interesting leads. I will try to follow them! I was at the bairro alto tonight, but for drinks - enjoyed my time there a lot though.

Gossip from CMS ? They'd cut my throat in a minute if I let any out here. But there's interesting stuff that the experiment will produce soon, that is for sure.

    Cheers,
    T.
If the "… the target is winter conferences ..."
    for
"… updated plots of the H->ZZ and H->γγ mass distributions
    with … the 2012 data … that could mean 25/fb …"
    then
are you open to a 100 (Euro or Dollar - winner's currency) bet
    that
the first conference/seminar/whatever to describe the full 2012 data for H -> ZZ
    will be consistent with
2 peaks that look like Higgs
with cross section as shown as a red dotted line in slide 31 of the Experimental Concluding Talk by G. Unal at Higgs Hunting 2012 (which looks to me sort of like about 25 percent of that expected for a single SM Higgs)
    and
located very roughly around 200 GeV and 270 GeV (that is, around the two highest peaks between 200 and 300 GEV in the two (ATLAS and CMS) plots in that slide 31).

If the full 2012 data for both ATLAS and CMS takes either one of those two peaks below the red dotted line in slide 31 then you win.

If the full 2012 data for both ATLAS and CMS leaves both of those two peaks at or above the red dotted line in slide 31 then I win.

If ATLAS and CMS disagree then it is a draw requiring a wait of a few years for more data which is too long to wait for a bet, so it is no bet.
