    About Danna

Cephalopods have been rocking my world since I was in grade school. I pursued them through a BA in marine biology at the University of California...

"That's something you don't see every day, Chauncey."
    "What's that, Edgar?"
"A man eating a whole live squid mere weeks after news reports that eating whole squid can lead to mouth insemination."

"But in this case, Edgar, that's not a concern. You see, those are juvenile market squid (Doryteuthis opalescens). Much too young to have functional spermatophores."
"All right, Chauncey, but there's another major risk to consider."
    "What's that, Edgar?"
"Popular outrage when squid are perceived to be tortured for entertainment."
"But in this case, Edgar, that squid probably died very quickly. One bite to the brain and it's gone."
"I still wouldn't do it, Chauncey."
    "Well neither would I, Edgar."

P.S. If you have no idea who Chauncey and Edgar are. And yes, that is the best explanation I could find online. If you find another--or better yet, a video clip (what's UP, YouTube?), please post in the comments!

h/t to Phil for sending the video.

This is actually tangentially related to how you came up in conversation at my aunt and uncle's house yesterday! We were discussing vegetarianism and the propensity for some vegetarian foods to try and imitate meat (usually badly), and decided that the reason they sell is because most vegetarians were once meat eaters. But then I brought up people who were raised vegetarian like a certain friend of mine. This then caused me to cite your quote, which you may have forgotten by now, that to you eating meat would be like eating plastic to me, it just doesn't seem like food.

Okay, I guess that wasn't related at all, but anyway, hope all is well!

Hah! That's great. I think I do remember saying that, and it's still true. I've never seen any meat I wanted to eat. (Much more tempting is cheese made with animal rennet--but fortunately there's also lots of great cheese made with microbial rennet.) Though I do like some of the fake meat in vegetarian Asian cuisine, like mock duck.
Anyway, yes, all is very well! We should chat sometime. I'd love to hear what you're up to these days. =)
